V8 Supercar Pitstop - October 2007

Tandem Tanders set to dominate

October 30th 2007 01:50
A historic double victory is in the wind this coming weekend when Garth Tander and wife Leanne both attempt to take control of their chosen championships.

Second in the V8 Supercars championship table ahead to this weekend’s round at Bahrain, Garth is looking to leapfrog over an in-form Jamie Whincup and take control of the championship once again. At the same time, Leanne is vying to be the first woman in Australia to win the CAMS Gold Star – the top award for open-wheeler racing in Australia.

Leanne already has one prestigious record under her belt, as the first woman to lead one of Australia’s premier racing categories, the Australian F3 Championship, and is currently in a three way battle for the championship against Tim Macrow and Charlie Hollings.

The unfortunate clash of events means Garth who, on his weekends free from V8 Supercar racing, is also Leanne’s engineer on their jointly-owned TanderSport F3 Dallara, will have to find out how his wife’s championship finishes up by phone from Bahrain.

“I am a bit disappointed not to be there, because we have worked very, very hard to get Leanne in a position where she can battle for the championship,” Garth said, “and now I am not going to be there to see how it pans out.

“But we have great guys who work with us in the Formula 3 program who are more than capable of running the car without me, and Leanne is more than capable of getting the job done.

“It is going to be a heck of a battle with three of them going at it, and it is a shame I can’t be there to see it. We will be racking up a fair phone bill with all the international phone calls that weekend.

“More than anything, I am happy with our TanderSport team’s performance this year in the Formula 3 program. It is really only our second year in, and to be battling for the championship is a true testament to the way our team has gone about it. As we expand next year, it is a good step into 2008.”

Leanne is understandably disappointed that her husband won’t be trackside to share in her potential F3 victory but is confident about her chances to gain the crown.

“We should be OK because we ran there (Oran Park) earlier this year without Garth,” she said. “We will have the same guys running the car and they have been running us all year, alongside Garth, so we should be OK.

“But, obviously it would be my preference to have him there. We will speak by phone, but I think that with the time difference and the fact that he is going to be on the plane between Bahrain and Hong Kong during at least one of the races, it is going to be a bit hard.”

All the best to Leanne for this weekend’s racing, hopefully the slim four point margin she has over the other drivers in the F3 championship will be enough to see her cross the line in style and take the title. And good luck to Garth in Bahrain; coming off a win at the Gold Coast he should be full of fight and eager to take back the lead of the V8 championship.

Holden Racing Team driver, Todd Kelly, will realise the dream of a lifetime next weekend when he takes to the track at Bahrain in a Chevrolet. Instead of his traditional red and white Holden Commodore, Kelly will power around the Desert 400 in round 12 of the championship in a snazzy black and gold Chevrolet Lumina to celebrate 10 years of Holden exports to the Middle East.

Todd is suitably excited about the prospect, “As a kid in Mildura, I always loved 1950s Chevys for all the flair and detail that was designed into those cars,” he said. “I used to collect Chevy belt buckles and I’ve still got a drawer full at home – plus I’ve got ten V8 Chevy engines in the workshop for cars, boats and hotrods.

Champ Cars on the Gold Coast
Following the success of this year’s Indy Carnival, speculation has been rife concerning the future of the V8 Supercars-Champ Cars partnership, with rumours circulating regarding possible additional joint rounds for both categories of motorsport.

Recent media reports have suggested negotiations are planned between V8 Supercars Australia and the American–based Champ Cars for a number of race meetings in each category to be held jointly, possibly at tracks around the world

Dancing with the Stars is over and done with for another week and it’s good to see Ford V8 Supercar driver James Courtney hanging in there after another week of limited dance practise due to his commitments at the V8 Supercar Challenge on the Gold Coast last weekend.

James and partner Olya Bourtasova lit up the floor with their rumba performance but were told by the judges that it wasn’t good enough and scored a measly 18 points out of 40. Personally, I thought that was probably a little harsh but did agree with one thing; that due to James’s lack of rehearsal time, although the steps were well executed, the passion and fire was missing

James Courtney gets saucy

October 10th 2007 11:23
James Courtney was once again showing fans what he was made of with a saucy salsa on Tuesday’s Dancing with the Stars. With muscles on display the 27 year old Ford driver shook parts of his body he’d probably never shaken before and seemed to have a great time doing it.

The audience may have been impressed but the judges weren’t, judging James and Olya down for a routine they considered to be too simple. Todd, in particular, was a little harsh in his criticism, appreciating that James had just experienced the busiest week of his season but taking the Jeld-wen driver to task for not taking the competition seriously enough to devote additional time to learning a more difficult routine

What a battle is ahead.

After last weekend’s amazing race which saw Team Vodafone’s Craig Lowndes and Jamie Whincup take out the season’s biggest race, the Supercheap Auto Bathurst 1000 at Mount Panorama, the championship has really hotted up with the top four drivers all looking forward to the last four rounds and eventual victory

Well Bathurst has been and gone for another year and has delivered on it’s perpetual promise to exceed all expectations yet again.

What an awesome weekend of racing with the only downside being the failure of Holden to make a mark on the podium, with the highest placed Holden driver pairing of Greg Murphy and Jason Richards crossing the line in fourth position

James Courtney blew his competition out the water last night dancing a stunning Tango with partner Olya Bourtasova on last night’s Dancing with the Stars on Network Seven. His impressive score of 29 out of 40 placed him in joint first place alongside Bridie Carter, not bad for a racing car driver.
