V8 Supercar Pitstop - December 2007

Garth Tander joins HRT

December 10th 2007 02:23
Following his championship win in the 2007 series, Garth Tander has joined Mark Skaife and the Holden Racing Team for the 2008 season, effective from December 7th.

Tander is excited about the move and looking forward to driving with the experienced former championship holder Skaife. “Having driven with HRT at Sandown and Bathurst last year I know how professional an outfit they are. Hopefully Mark and I can push each other to greater heights next year,” he said.

Tander has also praised the appointment of Rob Crawford as HRT Team Manager and Mathew Nilsson as his car engineer. “It will also be great to have Rob Crawford as Team Manager and Mathew Nilsson as my car engineer, given the success we have had.
I‘ll certainly miss the guys who helped me win the championship at the (Toll) Dealer Team and, of course, Rick Kelly who has been so consistently strong on the track over the last two years.”

Mark Skaife welcomes the addition of the reigning series champion to the Holden Racing Team stating that the former Toll driver is a great driver and showed exactly what he was capable of in this year’s championship race for the title. “I personally can’t wait to get back on the track early next year knowing the Holden Racing Team line-up on the track and off it is going to be stronger than ever,” Skaife said.

New HRT Team Manager Rob Crawford has been involved with V8 Supercars for many years, recently managing Melbourne based teams including the Holden Young Lions, Kmart Racing and the Toll HSV Dealer Team, where he was involved with back-to-back Team and Driver Championship wins with Rick Kelly in 2006 and Tander in 2007. He was also involved with HRT in the 1990s.

”I am thrilled with the opportunity to manage the Holden Racing Team,” Crawford said.

Tander’s recently vacated position with the Toll HSV Dealer Team has been filled by Paul Dumbrell, who has moved from the disbanded Supercheap Auto Team.

All the best, Todd

The former Holden Young Lion, who has also had a stint with the now defunct K-Mart Racing Team, was offered a place in this year’s championship winning Toll Dealer Team, an offer that was politely refused by the 28 year old Kelly. It’s understood that with HRT looking to snap up Garth Tander from the Toll team, Kelly was offered Tander’s position in a straight swap. Understandably, Kelly refused on the grounds that he would then be team mates with his younger brother in a team owned by his parents. A situation Todd has consistently stated he was not interested in being a part of

Mark Skaife joins 200 Club

December 3rd 2007 03:47
Mark Skaife may not have been a title contender this weekend at Phillip Island’s Grand Finale of the V8 Supercar Championship but he has managed to pass another milestone in an already brilliant career in the sport.

With his 200th round start now under his belt, Skaife has joined the elite ATCC/V8 Supercar 200 Club, an exclusive club with just four other members who have all reached that outstanding career figure of 200 round starts

The final round of the 2007 V8 Supercar Championship has been completed and after nine months and fourteen rounds of hard fought motor racing, just two points separated the top two drivers with Toll HSV driver Garth Tander finally taking the honours and the championship, stealing it away from an eager but disappointed Jamie Whincup.
Well done GT
Well done GT

It was a nail biting weekend for all concerned with the final result dependant upon finishing positions in the final race of the year. As usual, Philip Island put on a magnificent show with its sweeping corners, professional racing and stunning scenery, and all four title contenders, Tander, Whincup and their team mates Rick Kelly (Toll HSV) and Craig Lowndes (Team Vodafone) continued to dominate, all qualifying in the top ten
