V8 Supercar Pitstop - January 2008

V8 Supercars teams and drivers, 2008

January 31st 2008 04:46
A full grid of 32 V8 Supercars will line up for the 2008 championship series, once a licensing agreement has been finalised for the as yet un-named team which will join the battle after the season opener at the Clipsal 500 in Adelaide.

Thirty one cars will take part on the much anticipated Adelaide street circuit with the 32nd joining soon after in time for the Australian F1 Grand Prix in March. A number of changes have been announced during the off season, not least of which being the defection of a whole team from Ford to Holden.

New livery for Team BOC

Team BOC has switched camps, leaving the blue oval behind to pursue greatness under the Holden Lion, taking with them existing driver Andrew Jones and picking up paddock favourite Cameron McConville to drive their second car.

Garth Tander, of course, has taken his place in the Holden factory team alongside veteran Mark Skaife, replacing Todd Kelly who has joined Jack Daniels Racing. Taking Tander’s place in the HSV Dealer Team will be Paul Dumbrell who will race under the Autobarn Racing Team banner.

For the very first time the three top drivers from the 2007 Fujitsu Series have stepped up and joined the big boys in V8 Supercars. Champion of the 2007 Fujitsu Series, Tony D’Alberto will be driving a Rod Nash Racing Commodore, Michael Caruso joins Lee Holdsworth at the Garry Rogers Racing Team and Kayne Scott has taken a drive with Team Kiwi Racing.

Ex Team Kiwi driver Shane van Gisbergen has moved over to Stone Brothers Racing, taking Russell Ingall’s place, while Ingall has defected back to Holden, joining forces with Paul Morris and their new sponsor Supercheap Auto.

A full list of teams and drivers follows. The Clipsal 500 will take place from 21 - 24 February 2008.

A new start for the Holden Racing Team

January 30th 2008 10:25
In addition to snapping up current championship title holder, Garth Tander, for the 2008 season, HRT have scored a major new sponsor to add to their cars’ livery. Both Mark Skaife and Tander will drive new cars at the opening round in Adelaide with a brand new colour scheme designed by Holden designer Peter Hughes.

The traditional red and black colouring of Holden’s factory team will be set off perfectly with a predominantly pearlescent white livery, making the HRT cars stand out from the crowd with a simple elegance not seen before. In addition a major new sponsor will join the already impressive list of corporate supporters with freight company Toll joining Mobil as naming rights sponsor on both HRT cars

The successful partnership between Stone Brothers Racing, Jeld-wen Motorsport and James Courtney will continue into 2008. It was confirmed yesterday that a new agreement has been made between the interested parties with the only change being a brand new paint job for the number 4 Falcon.

“As a marketing initiative, our partnership with James and SBR for the past two years has worked very effectively to introduce the JELD-WEN brand to Australia and position the iconic brands of Stegbar, Corinthian, William Russell, Airlite and Regency Screens as the first choice for Australian builders and homeowners across the country,” said Jeld-wen’s National Marketing Manager Bruce Tosello

After a fairly successful attempt to revamp the V8 Supercar Championship points system in 2007, AVESCO has made additional changes for the 2008 season; retaining some of the amendments made last year and strengthening them by rewarding all drivers who finish the race, not just those who finish in the top fifteen placings.

In previous years, this was the standard way of scoring points with all drivers who crossed the finish line awarded at least one point. Last year, the scoring system changed with only those who finished within the top fifteen positions adding to their championship totals

V8 Supercars’ Team Kiwi Racing is returning to its roots in 2008 after a disastrous season in 2007 by electing to run their own entire operation in a new purpose built facility in Hamilton, New Zealand.

After a mid-season move in 2007 from Auckland and a number of well-documented issues during the year, both on and off the track, Team Kiwi have consolidated their position as the sole New Zealand based V8 Supercar team in the championship

A change of drivers for the 2008 Garry Rogers Motorsport team has been announced with Michael Caruso joining regular Lee Holdsworth in his first full time V8 Supercar drive.

The Garry Rogers team is well respected around the paddock, having been the jumping-off point for many a successful V8 Supercar career. Current title holder, Garth Tander, is just one of a number of drivers to have made it big in the sport after being given a chance by Garry Rogers. Other former GRM young guns include former Bathurst winner Jason Bargwanna, 2007 title runner-up Jamie Whincup, Jason Bright, Steven Richards, Cameron McConville and Leanne Ferrier (now Tander) who came close to being the first female to win the Australian Formula 3 series in 2007
