A new points system for V8 Supercars in 2008

January 18th 2008 07:19
After a fairly successful attempt to revamp the V8 Supercar Championship points system in 2007, AVESCO has made additional changes for the 2008 season; retaining some of the amendments made last year and strengthening them by rewarding all drivers who finish the race, not just those who finish in the top fifteen placings.

In previous years, this was the standard way of scoring points with all drivers who crossed the finish line awarded at least one point. Last year, the scoring system changed with only those who finished within the top fifteen positions adding to their championship totals.

“The board felt it was important that teams who made the effort in the lower half of the field should still be rewarded with points that reflect their finishing position,” V8 Supercars Australia Chief Executive Wayne Cattach said.

“We have done this without removing the importance of passing that we hope will result in a finish similar to last year when, after an entire season, one single pass would have changed the Championship in Jamie Whincup’s favour ahead of Garth Tander.

“The formula proved spot on in 2007 and we trust it will be the same in 2008.”

The new points system will reward the winner of the race for an outstanding performance, more than the other drivers, with positions second to sixth rewarded next highest and so on, all the way down to thirtieth. There will also be the same amount of points available for each race weekend, whether there is two or three races for that round.

“We think we have improved on last year’s points system by refining the tiers and placing more importance on winning or finishing higher in each graduation,” Mr Cattach said. “It is always a challenge to find a system that pleases everybody and is relatively simple to explain. We believe that this does both and remains fair to all competitors.”
