The 2007 V8 Supercar series is in full swing and with almost half of the fourteen rounds completed, a number of drivers are beginning to stand out from the rest.
Just a week out from round seven, the Holden partnership of Rick Kelly and Garth Tander, team mates in the Toll HSV Dealer Team, have pitched a tent at the top of the points table with no sign that they plan to move on any time soon.
After six rounds the top six in the points table are as follows:
1 Rick Kelly (Toll HSV Dealer Team) 336
2 Garth Tander (Toll HSV Dealer Team) 297
3 Todd Kelly (Holden Racing Team) 245
4 Jamie Whincup (Team Vodafone) 233
5 Mark Skaife (Holden Racing Team) 219
6 Craig Lowndes (Team Vodafone) 213
Although the top position currently belongs to Rick Kelly, the man to beat this season is almost certainly Garth Tander who is firing on all cylinders and looking extremely dangerous. New VE Commodores for the Toll team this year had some other drivers predicting that the cars would take a round or two to settle in. No-one anticipated that the VE would dominate from round one at Adelaide, showing a competitive streak that would prove hard to beat.
The VE Commodore is also the weapon of choice in the Holden Racing Team (HRT) where team boss, Mark Skaife, and team mate Todd Kelly were in danger of being banned from racing in the first race of this year’s championship due to pre-season proof of ownership issues. Thankfully, for HRT fans and fans of competitive racing alike, Skaife produced documentation confirming his ownership of the team and the two drivers took to the grid in round one at Adelaide with relief.
The list of top six drivers in the championship is completed with the addition of Team Vodafone drivers Craig Lowndes and Jamie Whincup in their BF Ford Falcons. The two Team Vodafone drivers have shown a competitive streak so far in this year’s championship, however inconsistency plagued them in the first few rounds.
Despite an obvious dominance by the Holden Commodore drivers so far this year, the BF Falcon is definitely a match for this season’s VE with Ford drivers controlling positions six through to ten on the points table and out-classing other the other Holden teams.
With Queensland Raceway beckoning for round seven next weekend (20-22 July), all teams and drivers will have a fight on their hands to maintain or improve current standings in the championship. And at this stage of the competition, the Toll HSV Dealer Team are looking dangerous and are definitely the ones to beat if the other drivers want to stay in touch with the top of the leader board.
