Clipsal 500 to become carbon neutral

November 12th 2007 02:32
From 2008 onwards, the Clipsal 500 race in Adelaide will be greenhouse gas free due to a new arrangement between the Australian Motor Sport Board and local company Carbon Planet. Deputy Premier Kevin Foley has announced an emissions audit will be undertaken, leading to recommendations regarding the reduction of emissions and a three year strategy concerned with managing carbon emissions during the race meeting.

“We are pleased to be making this announcement to coincide with the Clipsal 500’s 10th birthday, which will be held from 21st – 24th February 2008, Mr Foley says. “The audit will measure the carbon footprint of the event and all associated activities and it would identify where emissions can be reduced.”

“The program will also calculate the number of carbon credits required to offset the global warming impact of the event and will include the sourcing and sale of carbon credits once the audit has been completed.

“Where possible carbon credits will be purchased within South Australia.”

Mr Foley went on to commend the event organisers for their commitment which will result in all activities at the Clipsal 500 Adelaide event being CO2 free.

‘This initiative is in addition to the work already being undertaken by V8 Supercars Australia, BigPond and Future Climate Australia that commenced at this year’s Clipsal 500 and that is designed to offset the carbon emission generated by a full season of V8 Supercar racing by the planting of approximately fifteen thousand trees each year,” he says.

More information about V8 Racing Green can be found here.

“In addition, for the first time next year we will be offering free public transport on buses, trains and trams for all weekend ticket holders. This gift to race goers is funded by the State Government, the Motor Accident Commission, Adelaide Metro and the Clipsal 500.

“We also have an impressive line up of musical acts for the weekend including Santana, Powderfinger, Sneaky Sound System, Shannon Noll and Doc Neeson’s Angels.” Mr Foley finished.

Carbon neutrality for the Adelaide Clipsal 500 is due to coincide with the event’s tenth birthday in February 2008, planned to be the biggest race ever held on the South Australian street circuit.

The 2008 Clipsal 500 Adelaide will be held from 21 – 24 February as Round One of the V8 Supercar Championship Series. There will be four massive nights of after race concerts, free to Clipsal 500 ticket holders, including:

Thursday – ‘Sneaky Sound System’, ‘Little Birdy’ and ‘Lowrider’.
Friday – ‘Powderfinger’, ‘Kisschasy’ and ‘Expatriate’.
Saturday - ‘Shannon Noll’, ‘John Williamson’ and ‘Adam Harvey’.
Sunday – ‘Santana’ and ‘Doc Neeson’s Angels’.

Tickets for the event are available from BASS at www.bass.net.au.
