Grant Denyer to challenge the Mountain again

Everybody’s favourite former weatherman and motor sport fanatic Grant Denyer is set to compete in this year’s V8 Supercar endurance events at Sandown and Bathurst.

The occasionally controversial television presenter has been snapped up by the WPS/WOW Racing Team to partner either Jason Bargwanna or Max Wilson in one of the team’s Ford Falcons. Actual driver pairings will be announced closer to the time.

Grant Denyer, best known for his stint on Sunrise as weatherman, already has an extensive television career under his belt, and not only as co-commentator for Network Seven’s motor sport broadcasts. Denyer is also a past winner of the hugely popular Dancing with the Stars show and presenter of the other variety shows It Takes Two and Australia’s Got Talent.

Said the former weatherman confidently, "Um ... I think it's going to rain."

This won’t be Denyer’s first visit to the mountain. Last year saw the diminutive TV personality score a very respectable ninth in his debut Bathurst 1000, driving alongside Alex Davison. As a regular driver in the current Fujitsu V8 series, Denyer is excited about this opportunity to participate once more in the V8 Supercar’s premier race.

“Driving at Bathurst last year was one of the highlights of my life,” Denyer stated.

“Now with one Bathurst under my belt, I have an idea of what it is really like and how amazing that day is when you are a part of it as a driver. I cannot wait to get back there with WPS/WOW Racing and aim for another strong finish.”

“It’s every driver’s dream to race at Bathurst and give it your best shot,” he continued. “It’s such a tough race and having a good team around you means a lot, so it is a really great opportunity for me to enter Bathurst with this team and drivers the calibre of Max Wilson, Jason Bargwanna and Michael Caruso.”

Caruso is WPS/WOW’s other endurance race signing for the 2007 championship and Denyer’s team mate in the Fujitsu series.

Queensland Raceway had its first taste of ‘Denyer-itis’ yesterday when he joined the Gold Coast based WPS/WOW team for a day of testing ahead of the next round of the V8 Supercar competition.

“I have to thank Craig Gore and the entire team for giving me this opportunity, he stated enthusiastically. “WPS/WOW Racing has a very strong line-up of drivers for the endurance events this year, so no matter who I am paired with we will have a strong combination in both cars.”

Denyer is no novice in the sport of motor racing. At the age of fifteen he started racing karts, excelling at the highest level before moving on to V8 Utes to be crowned Summer Series champion in 2004. In 2005 Denyer stepped up to the Fujitsu V8 Supercars, a second tier V8 series.

“Grant is obviously a great personality for the sport and a fun person to be around, stated Craig Gore, WPS/WOW Racing Team Owner, “but his driving ability is often overlooked. You don’t win championships in V8 Utes and score podiums in Fujitsu Series by accident and last year at Bathurst he cast aside any doubters by finishing in the top 10 on his Bathurst debut.

“Grant and Michael Caruso are very capable young drivers and great signings for our team to join Max and Bargs in the endurance events. We are all looking forward to Sandown and Bathurst immensely.”
