Four long weeks have passed since the last round of the Supercar series in Darwin but finally round seven is almost here.
Queensland Raceway is abuzz with anticipation as fans, promoters, sponsors and teams alike all ready themselves for an awesome weekend of motor sport. A number of Queensland based teams have completed further testing ahead of the weekend’s racing, with the Jim Beam Racing duo of Steven Johnson and Will Davison looking particularly strong at their home track.
Johnson and Davison are currently sitting 9th and 10th respectively in the championship and both men are hopeful of improving their points tally. Adrian Burgess, the team’s sporting director, was satisfied with the day’s results, “We were up where we should be, with both cars running close lap times.
“Steve and Will put in a top effort; drivers cover a lot of miles on test days so it’s a credit to their fitness and concentration levels to stay consistent for the whole day.”
Two other prominent drivers looking to move closer to the top of the table are HRT’s Mark Skaife and Team Vodafone’s Craig Lowndes, 5th and 6th in the championship respectively and winners of round five at Eastern Creek (Skaife) and round six at Darwin (Lowndes). Both drivers are on fire and are looking to steal the crown from current Queensland Raceway champion Garth Tander (Toll HSV) who blitzed the competition at this track last year.
On a track that is typically a Ford testing ground, you would think that the Falcons would have home ground advantage. Up until last year this has been the case with Ford winning five of the last six year’s rounds here. So, with Holden drivers showing strong current form, this proves to be a championship round to look forward to. A tussle not to be missed between Ford and Holden and a weekend packed with competitive driving and close racing.
This opinion has been reiterated by John Tetley, Chairman of the Queensland Raceway, “This is the only time the V8 Supercars come to Queensland Raceway, so it’s an event no fan will want to miss. And the track is one of the best places in Australia for spectators to see the cars in action all the way around a lap.”
I for one can’t wait.
Queensland Raceway Stats and Info
The V8 Supercars will take to the track for three 120km races over the Saturday and Sunday, 21-22 July. Supporting racing includes the Fujitsu V8 series, Porsche Carrera Cup, Australian Formula Ford series, V8 Utes and MX-5 sports cars.
Queensland Raceway is 3.12km long and will be raced in a clockwise direction. The first V8 Supercar race was raced at the circuit back in 1999. The lap record is held by Garth Tander at 1 minute 11.0033 seconds and the current champion for this track is also Garth Tander.
There remains just one thing to say … (in a totally unbiased way, of course) ...
