James Courtney and his Tantalizing Tango
October 3rd 2007 05:54
James Courtney blew his competition out the water last night dancing a stunning Tango with partner Olya Bourtasova on last night’s Dancing with the Stars on Network Seven. His impressive score of 29 out of 40 placed him in joint first place alongside Bridie Carter, not bad for a racing car driver.
It was crunch time last night with the first of the elimination rounds seeing the departure of swimmer Michael Klim, leaving James heaving a deep sigh of relief to have survived the first elimination. It was reported to be his worst nightmare that he might be voted off after just the first week and his fingers were crossed that motorsport fans would get behind one of their own.
Courtney, who is juggling dance training with his V8 Supercar commitments, as well as other media work, is preparing for the biggest race on the V8 Supercar calendar coming up this weekend: The SuperCheap Auto Bathurst 1000.
"I'm copping a lot of flak from my mates for this," the self-confessed perfectionist smiles. "So I've got to make sure I do all right because if I'm no good I'll cop it even worse. So I've decided I don't care what it takes, I'm training crazy hours - up to seven hours a day – just to get on top of it."
He’s even arranged for wife, Carys to have dancing lessons so he can get extra practice. "My wife was pretty keen for me to do it and after all our lessons we will actually be able to dance together," he admits.
"I definitely didn't give dancers enough credit before, that's for sure. I probably didn't really think of it as much as a sport as what it actually is and now I really know how physical it is," he said.
"In dancing you have to walk without putting your heel down first – it's all super weird. And I've even found that after the lesson I'm walking home on my toes and people are looking at me like I'm an idiot."
Oh James, that’s not because you’re walking funny, it’s because you drive a Ford.

What next? I'm supposed to say something nice about Dan Carter? Like he's gorgeous or something totally untrue like that?

V8 Supercar Pitstop
Thanks for dropping in.
All I can say is that it's good to see V8 Supercar drivers getting a bit of positive exposure for the sport. The 'Dancing Driver' is one way to do this, I guess.

V8 Supercar Pitstop
Well, I can assure you that this will be the only time I will be supporting anyone from the Blue Oval, and as much as I hate to say it ... yes, I'd like to see a V8 driver get through.
I'm sure they would have asked
Skaifeya Holden driver to do the series instead but they knew he would totally blitz the competition and be just too good. That's why it had to be a Ford driver.
Hope your week is going well.
