Jamie Whincup wins Barry Sheene Medal
December 6th 2007 05:37
The who’s who of Australian V8 Supercars got together a few days ago for the annual end of season Gala dinner In Melbourne where Garth Tander was officially recognised as 2007 champion.
Jamie Whincup may have finished second in the series behind his Holden rival but the season finished on a high note for the Team Vodafone driver who won one of the sport’s most sought after awards: the Barry Sheene Medal.
The Barry Sheene Medal is awarded to the driver who is deemed to best represent the V8 Supercar series, both on and off track, throughout the series, and is voted for by the major media covering the sport.
This is a great achievement by the young Ford driver who, after just a few years in the sport, has finished the 2007 series just two points shy of taking out the championship himself. In addition he was pitted against his team mate, the well-respected, more experienced Craig Lowndes, who finished this year’s championship in third place, and dealt with the pressure admirably.
Other Whincup achievements from this season of racing include wins in both endurance races at Sandown and Bathurst, alongside Lowndes. If he had taken out the championship, Whincup would be just the third driver to have scored a V8 Supercar hat-trick: the championship and the two enduros within the same season.
Tony Cochrane, V8 Supercars Australia Chairman, stated that Whincup was a very deserving winner of the Medal. “Jamie has shown real character this year in bouncing back from situations with real guts and determination,” Mr Cochrane said, “but just as importantly he has handled himself like a consummate professional through those highs and lows.”
Well done Jamie … maybe you should change your name from Whincup to Whinmedal.
