Mark Larkham - Safety is the key
September 27th 2007 12:27
Mark Larkham, former V8 Supercar driver and team owner, has been appointed as a Director of the Australian Institute for Motor Sport Safety (AIMSS). He joins a number of prominent Australian motor sport legends in this important role, including Alan Moffat, Colin Osborne and Bob Glindemann.
Chairman of AIMSS, Dr Michael Henderson, was pleased to announce Larkham’s appointment on the board. "The appointment of Mark Larkham as an AIMSS Director is a welcome step in following the mission we embarked upon when launching the Institute at this year's Australian Grand Prix.” Henderson stated.
"Mark is well respected for his personal qualities and achievements in Australian motor sport at the highest level. His participation as a race driver in open wheel and closed car competition spans 20 years. Mark has operated as both driver and team owner during his career with responsibility for racing, technical and commercial operations.
"After winning the Australian Formula Ford Championship and being runner up twice to Mark Skaife in the Australian Drivers Championship for the CAMS Gold Star, Mark entered touring car competition in 1995. He became a foundation member of AVESCO (now V8 Supercars Australia) and the Touring Car Entrants Group Australia (TEGA) team franchise system, serving eight terms on their Boards during 1998-2006. He participated heavily in the growth years of V8 Supercars covering sporting, technical, regulatory, safety, commercial, media and marketing matters.
"Mark retired from full time driving in 2004 and sold his V8 Supercar team in 2006 to fulfil a long held family ambition of setting up a cattle stud operation before exploring other opportunities within the sport. These have now included accepting the position as a Director of AIMSS.
"We look forward to Mark applying his background knowledge and expertise to the research and educational activities taken up by AIMSS."
Larkham was pleased to accept this honour and stated that:
"Achieving and maintaining high levels of safety in a sport such as motor racing is without doubt a thoroughly challenging task.
“By its very nature, motor sport continues to push the performance envelope, and having been personally embraced by that 'envelope' and the inherent dangers it encompasses for many years, I am motivated to contribute in an attempt to ensure that improved safety initiatives, research and development go 'hand in glove' with the ongoing pursuit of sporting performance.
"The formation of the AIMSS is a credit to those whom pursued its establishment, and as the FIA Institute has comprehensively demonstrated can be done at the international level, it now provides a firm basis for improving motor sport safety in Australia.
"I look forward to interacting with the depth of experience and knowledge that exists on both the AIMSS Board and its Research Advisory Group."
To welcome Mark Larkham into his new role he has been invited to chair two sessions at the upcoming seminar AIMSS 'Safety – First' in Melbourne this October.
