At the weekend I posted information about an open day being held at the Melbourne Headquarters of Tasman Motorsport, so I thought it was appropriate to introduce a little bit of history and information on the team.
The Tasman Motorsport team is a fairly recent addition to the V8 Supercar ranks, being formed in 2004 from the remnants of the Lansvale Racing Team. Originally based in Sydney, the team made a permanent move to Melbourne, locating their headquarters in the northern suburb of Preston, close to Harrop Engineering.
The team started off with just one driver in 2004, when Kiwi Jason Richards changed over from South Australian outfit Team Dynamik to take possession of Tasman’s VX Commodore. By mid-season, Richards enjoyed an upgrade to a new VY Commodore and a new partner in the endurance races; Fabian Coulthard.
Richards and Coulthard drove the team to a top ten finish in their first Sandown endurance race and were looking promising for a top six finish at Bathurst before a stone pierced their radiator, forcing a premature end to their race.
Since their inception, Tasman Motorsport have proven their worth, showing a determination and professionalism that has seen them fight on level terms with the recognised ‘big boys’ of the sport.
The second season for Tasman saw an expansion from one car to a two car team when Jason Richards was joined by rookie Jamie Whincup, recently signed from a stint in Formula Ford. The pairing proved beneficial for the Tasman team in 2005 scoring highly in both endurance events; a third at Sandown followed by an enthralling fight at Bathurst and a second placing behind Mark Skaife and Todd Kelly.
In 2006, Richards welcomed another team mate after Whincup left, another rookie in the V8 Supercar series, Andrew Jones. The year was full of ups and downs for the team but saw a special moment when Jason Richards finally secured their first win.
In 2007, another team mate for Richards has joined the ranks after the departure of Andrew Jones. The well-respected and experienced Greg Murphy has come onboard from SuperCheap Auto Racing and with two new VE Commodores for the drivers to play with, Tasman Motorsport looks ready to shine.
