A strong vote of confidence for Tony Cochrane
November 12th 2007 02:13
Tony Cochrane, Chairman of V8 Supercars Australia, has been returned to the position he has made his own in a unanimous vote of support from the seventeen participating teams.
Cochrane has been Chairman since the V8 Supercars concept was spawned from the Australian Touring Car Championship and has assisted in the rapid growth of a sport he obviously feels very passionately about. As the public face of the sport, he was intending to step down at the end of this three year stint in the job but after unanimous support from the V8 teams, he has agreed to remain in the position until a suitable replacement can be found.
The decision was part of the Touring Car Entrants Group (TEGA) AGM which elected a five-man board to represent the teams on a single board that governs all V8 Supercars affairs.
Tim Edwards from FPR, Ross Stone of Stone Brothers Racing, Larry Perkins owner of Jack Daniel’s Racing and Paul Morris of Team Sirromet were elected by the teams to represent their 75 per cent shareholding in V8 Supercars Australia.
“These are all men with many years of experience in the sport,” V8 Supercars Australia CEO Wayne Cattach said following the decision. “These newly elected board members have been entrusted with helping shape the immediate future of a sport that has grown exponentially in the last decade.
“They take on great responsibility along with the other representatives of the board from SEL in building on current growth, future direction, strategy and planning for the long-term.”
One of the TEGA board’s first responsibilities will be the implementation of a new Team’s Licence Agreement, the document that governs participation in the sport.
Congratulations to Tony Cochrane on his reappointment as chairman. He has done a fantastic job in raising the profile of the V8 Supercar Championship throughout Australia and has even introduced the championship internationally, while still maintaining a thoroughly Australian character to the sport.
He will be hard to replace.
