Twinkletoes Courtney – down but not out
October 26th 2007 04:25
Dancing with the Stars is over and done with for another week and it’s good to see Ford V8 Supercar driver James Courtney hanging in there after another week of limited dance practise due to his commitments at the V8 Supercar Challenge on the Gold Coast last weekend.
James and partner Olya Bourtasova lit up the floor with their rumba performance but were told by the judges that it wasn’t good enough and scored a measly 18 points out of 40. Personally, I thought that was probably a little harsh but did agree with one thing; that due to James’s lack of rehearsal time, although the steps were well executed, the passion and fire was missing.
Rumba is a very passionate dance and Courtney was obviously finding it difficult to connect in a passionate way to a woman other than his wife. An admirable trait but it did him no favours on this week’s show. The judges criticised him saying he was not living up to his potential but unfortunately for James, a race meeting has to take priority and dance practise will always come a distant second on weeks where he is racing.
All that aside, even though the Jeld-wen driver scored second bottom after the judges scores were finalised, he flew through to the next round, by-passing the elimination which saw Patti Newton scrape through by the skin of her teeth and Jessica “two left feet” Rowe left to wonder how on earth people manage to dance without forgetting the steps.
It’s good to see the voting public and motor racing fans getting behind James Courtney and with competition hotting up, James is much appreciative of the support given to him which has taken him through to the top six of the series.
"At Indy last weekend there were people coming up to me from everywhere saying they were voting," said Courtney. "This makes a big difference with who goes and who stays on the (Dancing With The Stars) show."
"I thought Olya and I might be gone after the judges showed their scores, so we were pleased and relieved when our names were called out for next week's show.”
So, forget that he drives a Ford and get behind James Courtney.
