Good news for V8 Supercar fans!

It has been announced by V8 Supercars Australia Chairman, Tony Cochrane, that the Gold Coast round of the 2009 championship will definitely be going ahead, despite problems with the IndyCar series leaving Surfers Paradise off next year’s provisional schedule.

The Gold Coast Indy is threatened due to disputes over scheduling between Indy organisers and the Queensland State Government, with Indy bosses insisting that the tournament will begin and finish in the US and didn’t want the finale to take place overseas.

The Queensland Government stubbornly supports the October schedule for the Gold Coast race, stating that it filled a gap where tourism in the Sunshine State is traditionally quiet despite the Indy organisers giving the State Government two other date options for the event in 2009.

Cochrane has suggested that one option is to replace the IndyCars with the Deutsche Touring Car Masters (DTM) German touring car championship, which runs V8 Mercedes Benz and Audi racing cars, stating that the date and cannot be changed.

“That date (October 22-25) is locked in,” Cochrane said in an interview with Bigpond Sport. “There is no question about that date and the Queensland Government has been running this event for a long, long time.

“When I was chief executive of the Gold Coast Indy I moved it from March to October 11 years ago mainly because of requests from Queensland tourism and hotel groups because late October was a particularly quiet time there.

“It’s run happily ever since.

“No-one in their right mind would move it to the two dates the IRL suggest and one is the Clipsal 500 weekend and the other is late September which runs into preliminary finals in the NRL and the AFL.

“I’m here to tell you the Queensland Government isn’t budging from that date.

“I think if the IRL are stupid enough to pass on that date then the Government will just pull in another international category and there are lots of them out there.”

Cochrane has ruled out the possibility of replacing the IndyCars with the A1 Grand Prix of Nations due to financial difficulties within the A1 GP series.

“The A1 GP is $320 million in the red and my personal thought is that the Government wouldn’t look at that championship.

“I doubt the government would jump out of the fat and into the fire.”

“I would personally see something like the DTM out here and make it the world’s greatest weekend of touring cars. We are the best two touring car championships in the world.

“How that would sit with their calendar, I don’t know but it’s certainly worth asking the question.”

And his view on the decision made by the Indycar organizers, the IRL?

“Maybe the IRL will wake up to themselves,” Cochrane says. “That’s the weekend we will be there, that’s the weekend Channel 7 will be there and that’s the weekend V8 Supercars TV will be there.

“The only question mark is, will the IRL be there?”

Phillip Island Enduro hailed a success

September 17th 2008 00:55
The inaugural Phillip Island 500 km endurance race, held last weekend, has been hailed a crowd-pulling success by V8 Supercars Australia. Compared to the Sandown 500 last year, the 2008 L&H 500 pulled attendance figures of 54,929 over the three day event, 3802 more than last year’s 500 km race.

Despite the fact that the Phillip Island Grand Finale in 2007 managed to attract almost 68,000, V8 Supercars Australia Chairman, Tony Cochrane, is pleased with the numbers

Despite recent comments by James Courtney, accusing the Holden drivers of being “too old”, red was the colour of the day yesterday as HRT drivers Mark Skaife and Garth Tander took out the first enduro of the season.

Phillip Island came alive for the inaugural L&H 500, putting on an awesome weekend of V8 Supercar racing and creating the perfect build-up for the Supercheap Bathurst 1000 next month

Jeff Grech's views on the Enduros

September 12th 2008 03:22
Jeff Grech, manager of Sprint Gas Racing, is one of many who are looking forward to the upcoming V8 Supercar endurance races and is confident his drivers can battle with the best of them.

“We’re not under quite as much pressure because we’re not in the Championship race so you can be a little bit more aggressive with strategy, as long as you do it safely,” he said. “Drivers like Mark Winterbottom and Steven Richards, Garth Tander and Rick Kelly will have to be a little bit more conservative on their strategy because their Championship is at stake whereas ours isn’t

Sprint Gas Racing have announced their driver pairings for the Enduros, starting with the L&H 500 at Phillip Island in 9 days time. Team member Jason Richards will make his 100th Championship start and is enthusiastic about the team’s chances as he gets ready to share the drive with team mate Greg Murphy.

“The team has been working towards the endurance rounds all season; I think we’ll be fast,” said Richards. “We’ve put a lot of work in to the development of these cars. My car has qualified in the top 10 for the past four rounds and we’ve had good race pace

With the endurance races just around the corner, the V8 Supercar teams are readying themselves for this energy sapping and important part of the championship.

A vital part of the teams’ preparation is their choice of co-driver for each of the full-time drivers, and ensuring that these, sometimes rookie V8 Supercar ‘blow-ins’, are as ready as possible for the challenge the enduro races can bring

Tander does it again

April 23rd 2008 00:38
Garth Tander has done it again, reminding V8 Supercar fans just why he is the reigning series champion, taking out all three races in the inaugural Hamilton 400 last weekend.

Jamie Whincup, who was sitting pretty on top of the points table before the round began, had a major racing incident during qualifying after coming together with Todd Kelly’s Commodore halfway through the second session. A passing move went horribly wrong for Whincup when Kelly, with nowhere else to go, speared across the track off the ripple strip, clipping Whincup and sending him crashing into the wall. The car was so severely damaged that the weekend was over before it had even begun for the #88 Team Vodafone driver

Hamilton ready to rumble

April 17th 2008 03:36
After almost three years in the making, the newest circuit on the V8 Supercars program has finally been completed, ready for this weekend’s round of the 2008 Series.

The street circuit in Hamilton, New Zealand, was first conceived in July 2005 when the then Mayor, Michael Redman, approached V8 Supercars Australia, attempting to convince them of the viability of a round in his beautiful city. By January 2006 a helicopter flyover had located a suitable circuit and the planning began later that year

V8 Supercar drivers are joining together to call for an extended presence at future Australian Grand Prix race meetings. The success of the Sprint Gas V8 Supercar Manufacturers Challenge at last weekend’s AGP has seen a number of high profile drivers call for more laps per race for Australia’s premier race cars at the international event, with an ultimate view to making each race similar in length to a standard championship race meeting.

This is despite the fact that this year’s AGP saw the V8s race an extra ten laps when compared to their last visit in 2006. In total, 49 laps were raced in the Manufacturers Challenge, not too far short of the 58 laps the Formula 1 cars raced

Toll HRT - the team to beat

March 14th 2008 06:03
Toll HRT are on a roll this weekend at the Sprint Gas V8 Supercars Manufacturers Challenge. Mark Skaife showed a positive turn of speed in qualifying yesterday, finishing the session in provisional pole position but it was Garth Tander who stole the show today in the top ten shoot out, blitzing the field to put his Holden Commodore on position one on the grid for this afternoon’s first race.

With a flying lap of 1min 58.2337sec, Tander was unbeatable, tearing past the impressive time set two cars before by Craig Lowndes in his Ford Falcon. He had to wait impatiently for another five cars to complete their flying laps before being declared pole position sitter, leading the Red team from the front

March 13th 2008 10:57
Mark Skaife has blasted his way into provisional pole position for this weekend’s Red v Blue Sprint Gas V8 Supercars Manufacturers Challenge at the Australian Grand Prix.

The Toll HRT veteran overcame all-comers to draw first blood for the Red corner at Albert Park today with an impressive 1:58.5086 lap, waiting until the dying seconds before leap-frogging the competition, including Steven Richards who had, moments before, jumped to the top of the qualifying leader board with a 1 min 58.6621 lap

The Australian F1 Grand Prix next weekend will see the introduction of the newest V8 Supercar team, the Ausdrill Ford Rising Stars Racing Team. This will be the first time the team have wet their feet in the main series after a number of years in the development series.

“Our license purchase went through recently and the first meeting we could enter for was the AGP”, team Owner Jim Morton said. “The whole team is suffering from racing deprivation and after four years of racing in the V8 Development Series there is almost a surreal feeling that next week we get our first start in the main series

With three different race winners in three different races, Ford definitely came out as winners with Davison and Mark Winterbottom (FPR) taking the top two positions on the podium. The 2007 championship winner Garth Tander was the winner of race one and the only Holden driver to stand on the dais on Sunday afternoon, taking out third place overall
