Celebrations for both Ford and Holden fans last weekend in Bahrain with a round win for FPR’s Mark Winterbottom and Toll HSV driver Garth Tander taking back the lead of the championship points table from Jamie Whincup.

Not even a dramatic hit in race two between Tander and his team mate Rick Kelly, which resulted in Garth spinning his Commodore, could stop the lanky Western Australian from scraping together enough points and once more gaining control of the championship.

"I didn't know Rick was so far up on the inside," Tander said. "There was only a small bit of contact but with very little grip here it was just enough to turn the car around. Rick and I have raced together for several years without swapping paint so it's unfortunate that it has cost us points.”

Whincup’s weekend went from bad to worse, scoring no points and resulting in the Team Vodafone driver dropping from first to third on the points table.

Mark Winterbottom picked up his first solo round win ever after a number of weeks of bad luck with an impressive tally of two wins and a third place in the three races. “It’s been a long time coming and to have the speed we do without the results has been a major disappointment to the team,” Frosty said.

He took pole position in race one, his fourth of the year, following up with victories in the first two races. Only impressive drives by Craig Lowndes and James Courtney in race three prevented the FPR driver from taking out the hat trick.

Mark Winterbottom enjoying his victory

“This weekend all went smoothly and when it is like that you get the results. It is great to have gained my first solo win at this international event and to keep the team's Desert 400 Champion title in tact. The team did an outstanding job this weekend."

Being voted out of Dancing With The Stars last week doesn’t seem to have adversely affected James Courtney who finished the weekend in second behind Frosty. “All year we’ve had little things go wrong that have cost us podiums here and there but it’s good to be getting a few now in the back half of the year,” the Jeld-wen Ford driver smiled.

“We ran quite well all weekend; Mark (Winterbottom) was the pace setter. To get a great start and get ahead of Mark in the last race and to be able to pull a gap on him was great for us. When Craig (Lowndes) came out of the pits I knew that he would have very good tyres so I really couldn’t fight too much. I hoped that once his tyres went off he might come back to me but that didn’t happen.”

“SBR has had three in a row now so it’s great to finally have things coming right and get the rewards. I thought that a round win could finally be on the cards today. We’ve been getting closer and closer. We may not always have the outright pace of some of the others but we have been racing really well. It’s been driving me crazy seeing these guys on the top step; hopefully our turn is not far away.”

Third overall was a dogged performance by Jim Beam Racing driver Steven Johnson, coming in just ahead of his team mate Will Davison on points. “… we had a bit of luck with a few orange (Toll HSV) cars coming together and taking each other out but it is still great for the team,” Johnson said.

The championship is really hotting up now, with just two rounds to go only 34 points split Tander in first on the table and Rick Kelly in fourth.
1. Garth Tander 530 points
2. Craig Lowndes 510 points
3. Jamie Whincup 501 points
4. Rick Kelly 496 points

Mark Skaife and the Holden Racing Team have stated that following the traffic accident yesterday when four V8 Supercars were damaged, Skaife’s car will be fit to race at Bahrain this weekend.

The Holden Commodore was badly damaged requiring many parts to be replaced and an emergency shipment of spare parts to be sent from the headquarters in Melbourne, which will arrive in Bahrain in time for Saturday’s races, if required. Skaife’s car was hit hard from behind by Winterbottom’s Falcon, smashing it forward into the cabin of the truck

Bad Luck always comes in threes

November 1st 2007 11:30
Bad luck is following Mark “Frosty” Winterbottom around like a bad smell at the moment, although Mark Skaife would probably disagree, claiming all the bad luck for himself.

Both drivers suffered unfortunate incidents at Bathurst which saw their races go from good to bad in the blink of an eye. Both drivers had experiences at the Gold Coast Indy which were best forgotten, particularly Frosty who saw a well-deserved pole position stripped from him at the last minute due to a minor mechanical infringement

Holden Racing Team driver, Todd Kelly, will realise the dream of a lifetime next weekend when he takes to the track at Bahrain in a Chevrolet. Instead of his traditional red and white Holden Commodore, Kelly will power around the Desert 400 in round 12 of the championship in a snazzy black and gold Chevrolet Lumina to celebrate 10 years of Holden exports to the Middle East.

Todd is suitably excited about the prospect, “As a kid in Mildura, I always loved 1950s Chevys for all the flair and detail that was designed into those cars,” he said. “I used to collect Chevy belt buckles and I’ve still got a drawer full at home – plus I’ve got ten V8 Chevy engines in the workshop for cars, boats and hotrods.

Well Bathurst has been and gone for another year and has delivered on it’s perpetual promise to exceed all expectations yet again.

What an awesome weekend of racing with the only downside being the failure of Holden to make a mark on the podium, with the highest placed Holden driver pairing of Greg Murphy and Jason Richards crossing the line in fourth position

Greg Murphy can’t remember the last time he raced at Oran Park in the rain … but that’s exactly what happened today. Oran Park treated drivers and fans alike with a chaotic thrill ride which kept teams on their toes and drivers working hard all day as the rain relentlessly pelted down. The weather did nothing to put Lee Holdsworth off in his Valvoline Cummins Commodore though as the twenty four year old finished the round with his first ever race win and first ever round win in the V8 Supercar series.

Todd Kelly has celebrated his 100th start in V8 Supercars with pole position in this weekend’s round of the championship. With a grin that stretched from ear to ear he accepted his anniversary prize of $5000 for the fastest qualifying time.

As usual, the qualifying session threw a number of surprises into the mix at Oran Park this weekend, knocking out a couple of big names in leg one. Craig Lowndes, one of the contenders for the championship, was disappointed to qualify in 23rd position, well down the order, and one position behind James Courtney in the Jeld-wen Stone Brothers Ford

Tasman Motorsport has a previous relationship with this weekend’s track of the V8 Supercar championship, and the Melbourne based team is hoping to take advantage of their intimate knowledge of Oran Park Raceway.

And Jason Richards, after a number of outspoken outbursts before, during and after the last round at Queensland Raceway, is definitely much more positive about Tasman’s prospects at Oran Park
