Doing it for the troops in Iraq
November 6th 2007 12:55
Australian soldiers in southern Iraq were visited yesterday by four high profile V8 Supercar drivers. Just a hop, skip and a jump from Bahrain, where the quartet of Rick Kelly, Greg Murphy, Craig Lowndes and Jason Bright were racing Holdens and Fords around a desert track, is Overwatch Battlegroup West III, based at the Tallil Air Base.
Excitement was at fever pitch when the four favourites touched down in the war-torn country, meeting with the troops, signing autographs and entertaining everyone with an armoured vehicle race between a Bushmaster infantry mobility vehicle and an Australian Light Armoured Vehicle.
Ford may have won the weekend of racing in the sands of Bahrain but the Holden pairing of Kelly and Murphy outclassed their Ford rivals, winning the armoured vehicle race in grand style.
"What a sensational day for the soldiers," Lieutenant Colonel Jake Sellwood said in appreciation. Days such as this are important to the troops, breaking the monotony of tedious day-to-day activities in Iraq.
"Meeting all the troops has just been a huge eye-opener for me," said Craig Lowndes.
"My wife Nat wasn't too keen on me going for obvious reasons but I was keen to come here and really see first-hand what it's all about.
"When you see it back at home on the news it's nothing like what it's like close up."
