Australia’s favourite motorsport has cleaned up its image this year with a world first. In conjunction with BigPond and Future Climate Australia, V8 Supercars Australia has become the first race series in the world to announce a carbon offset scheme designed to cover the entire year’s championship.
Launched in March before the first round in Adelaide, the V8 Racing Green program will attempt to totally offset all carbon emissions created by the championship series by planting 10,000 trees around the country. This should be enough greenery to offset the carbon generated during an entire season of V8 racing.
Speaking about the scheme, Tony Cochrane, chairman of V8 Supercars Australia, is convinced of the positive impact such a program will have on the environment and he is committed to ensuring the V8 Supercar series is carbon neutral.
“V8 Supercars Australia recognises the important role we can play in reducing carbon emissions and educating the public about climate change,” Cochrane said at the launch of the scheme in March. “Through the V8 Racing Green program, we can balance our carbon emissions while at the same time educating our millions of fans on what we see as the number one issue facing the environment. We are proud to lead the way for motorsport globally and want to make a difference.”
Not only are these 10,000 trees designed to offset the carbon produced during the races, they will also account for emissions created transporting the teams to each event and any other carbon producing activities that each race meeting may have organised.
The role of the V8 Racing Green program also includes an educational aspect, teaching millions of fans about climate change at each event.
The main functions of V8 Racing Green in 2007 are:
• Advocating a carbon trading message to fans to encourage them to return emissions from their everyday lives.
• In conjunction with Future Climate Australia they will plant 10,000 trees across the country.
• By visiting primary schools around the country and donating trees, V8 Racing Green hopes to highlight the issue and educate their youngest fans.
• To include ‘Carbon Calculators’ in all schools material at every race event.
• To Introduce a 5 per cent ethanol blend fuel in every race car across the entire 2007 championship.
