Welcome to the Jim Beam 400 - Oran Park
August 13th 2007 01:37
The next round of the V8 Supercar championship is almost upon us and this time it’s New South Wales who has the honour of welcoming these powerful beasts into its home once again.
Round eight of the championship series will be held next weekend, 17th – 19th August 2007 at Oran Park Raceway, 45 km from Sydney at Narellan. A popular race track, Oran Park has been welcoming petrol-heads to its bosom since 1963 and boasts 3 motor racing circuits, 2 dirt circuits, 2 four wheel drive training venues and a skid pan. The track has the distinction of being the longest continuous host of a round of the Australian Touring Car Championships.
Oran Park is a great track for spectators with a large open grandstand, smaller covered grandstand and grassed hills. From the hills fans can see much of the track. Parking at the track is free and ample parking is provided right outside.
Oran Park Raceway consists of two distinct tracks which have been merged to create the race track we know today. A small figure eight track of 660 metres combined with the main southern track of 1.96 km have resulted in a 2.7 km thrill ride which loops over itself and takes a V8 Supercar just 1 minute 8 seconds to negotiate.

Qualifying – Mark Skaife (1999) 1 minute 7.4806 seconds
Race – Craig Lowndes (1999) 1 minute 8.0631 seconds
Previous winners of the V8 Supercar round at Oran Park include Mark Skaife (1999, 2000, 2001,2002), Marcos Ambrose (2003,2004), Russell Ingall (2005) and Craig Londes (2006).
A new arrangement between Jim Beam and V8 Supercars Australia has seen this season’s Oran Park round renamed the “Jim Beam 400”, strengthening the already substantial commitment Jim Beam has with V8 Supercars through team sponsorship (JB Racing Team, drivers Stephen Johnson and Will Davison).
Kel Constantine, Jim Beam’s Sponsorship & Events Manager, says the Jim Beam brand enjoys a strong connection with motorsport racing and the Jim Beam 400 round of the V8 Supercars series is a welcome addition to the already strong motorsport portfolio.
“Anyone who’s ever been to historic Oran Park to witness a V8 Supercar round is familiar with the awesome sights, sounds and smells that make the sport so exciting to watch and be a part of,” Kel said.
“There’s heart thumping adrenaline and action at every turn and we’re thrilled to have the naming rights to the Jim Beam 400 - one of only two Sydney V8 Supercar rounds.”
Oran Park Raceway Manager, Jeff Boulous, is also excited about the new sponsorship deal. “Sydney’s favourite motor racing event is proud to welcome Jim Beam for the Jim Beam 400. Jim Beam is an outstanding sponsor of the V8 Supercar Championship Series, and we look forward to an excellent partnership.”
Recently, the land on which the racetrack is on was sold to the NSW Government for a new housing development. This will lead to the closure of the track within the next two years. The owner is planning a replica circuit in close proximity to the current location.

Nope. That would not be the trade mark of this blog.

I saw Jim Beam in the title header, and thought this was a chance to win a years supply of grog.
On an aside? You're a better racing journo than the ones getting paid. You and Dusk should create a sports mag.

If I ever get a bottle of JB ... I definitely won't be giving it away!!!
Thanks for the compliment, David. To be compared to a writer as good as Dusk is an honour.

I'd love to be there, unfortunately the closest I'll get is watching it on telly. It's a bit too far to go from Melbourne.
Bad luck that you'll miss out too ... hopefully back to normal next year.
Thanks for stopping by again Chris.
